For my daughter’s 7th birthday- she wanted a Ballerina theme. She was taking ballet classes weekly and would still come home and practice in her free time. It was the perfect theme for her. We decided on a 2 hour party.
When the girls first arrived I had them make their own tutu skirt! I had the skirts started for them by taking a ribbon (long enough to go around their waists and tie in a bow) and pieces of tulle fabric tied onto it. Then the girls were able to choose from different colors of tulle fabric that were laid out on the table. These pieces were cut out in 2in thick strips that were probably 15-18in long. I invited each girl to pick some colors of tulle and knot it onto their ribbon to make their own tutu skirt unique to their style and to the colors they liked best! The skirts turned out super cute- but some girls did have a hard time tying the tulle on. So another option is just getting the girls their own ballerina tutus to wear!

We played some games: musical chairs– because it is a dance party after all, and hot potato. But, not just any hot potato- I added a pink tutu on it so it was a ballerina hot potato! and don’t make the rookie mistake of forgetting to have prizes for the winners of the games!

We also did the standard pin the tutu on the ballerina – I took a large piece of paper and traced my daughter! She then colored a skirt on and decided her friends would have to pin a bow onto the skirt. Then we had a ballerina pinata similar to this one.

But I know nothing about ballet! I played all the sports and can easily throw a party that involves a ball- just not BALLet. 🙂
I decided since I dont know ballet- I would ask her teacher if she would be able to come and give the girls a ballet lesson and she agreed! Not only did she agree, but she was super excited about it and came very prepared!

The ballet teacher did various warm-up exercises with the girls, then showed them basic foot positions.

None of the girls at the party were in dance lessons- so they were all very excited to get a taste of what it was about. The ballet lesson was about 45min long and when it was over all the girls bowed and I purchased fake flowers – which I then threw out flowers to each of them like they would receive as if they were on a real stage after a performance.

Instead of a cake to celebrate- I decided to do cupcakes and shaped them into a ballerina pose. I think it turned out super cute!

As a thank you for coming- the girls brought home their bouquets, the tutu skirts they made, and these other ballet goodies. Oh- and an easy thank you card we included- a cute printout of a ballerina with a hair scrunchie stapled on as the tutu! But if you don’t feel like making your own- these are super cute and similar to include in the gift bags.
