Space Party Fun for Kids: Crafts, Games, and Treat Ideas for a 5th Birthday

3….2….1….. BLAST OFF! Here are some fun ideas I had for my son’s 5th birthday- Space Theme. We invited his preschool class- about 15 kids, so I essentially mimicked a little of what they did in preschool- I had different activity tables/stations setup so they could explore on their own.

For invitations I printed out the information on colored cardstock- then cutup some construction paper in different shapes to form a rocketship. I added some ribbons (for the jet effect) and a small dowel rod to the back- which made it so fun for the kids to fly them through the air! If you’re not totally into diy- these invites are a great option!

The first essential must have for a space party is: stomp rockets! Luckily we had nice weather for the party so this was setup outside in the yard. I even laid out some hula hoops as “targets”. The kids could probably just play with these the entire time, they are so fun!

There was a craft station that had two things to make. Make your own marbled planet and make your own cosmic space bottle.

To make marbled planets– I used a pie pan and had precut circle pieces of paper that fir in the bottom of the pan. I let each child pick out a few squirts of paint then added a few marbles and voila, space planets. The kids rolled the marble back and forth all over the tray which moved the paint around into a very cool effect. But, if painting isn’t your thing- having the kids color these space themed magnets is just as fun!

To make cosmic space bottles – I saved mini apple juice bottles to use. I added a 1/3 cup of oil to the bottle, then filled the rest with water. The kids could pick from a variety of sparkly glitter to add, and also a few drops of food coloring. Then I closed the lids back up and let them shake them crazy to create a swirling spacey cosmic bottle.

I also had a space sensory bin. This was simply black beans, some silver confetti, and random space toys we already had on hand. This was semi popular at the party- but its been a bigger after!  Amazon also has a great selection of space sensory bin fillers to have more variety.

For the treat I opted for cupcakes that I purchased at the store. I had them made with certain color frosting so I could arrange the cupcakes to look like a rocket! And if you’re going to have a rocket for the cake- you have to add sparklers for the blast off! (which they fizzled out before I could get a good photo!) The kids loved it!

and instead of ice cream to go with the cake- this is a must have for a space party treat!

While everyone was enjoying their cupcakes- I grabbed a few parents to help me hide space rocks! I took easter eggs (filled with candy) and wrapped them in aluminum foil for all the kids to find. It was a great space scavenger hunt!

And lastly- lets not forget the treat bags! I opted for something like this to fill the bags- but was sure to include star crunch bars! I am a child of the 90’s after-all!
